What interested you about becoming
– I started doing photography as a form of self-expression--to document the world around me to record interesting places and events. My father has been an amateur photographer for most of his life. He gave me a camera when I was 18 and after that I studied photography at Ryerson in Toronto.
Where do you find inspiration to
make your photographs?
– I get inspiration from my family and friends, from music and from natural light during the different seasons. Many of my photos come as a result of a careful observation of the world around me. My blog:"The Image Journey" at www.avardwoolaver.com helps me collect my thoughts on the visual process.
What do you most like to
– I like to photograph everyday life and situations. My focus is on photos that have a sense of humor and that show beauty in mundane scenes. I'm interested in New Topography, the human-altered landscape and what I call mindscapes--images with elements of surrealism.
Who are your favorite photographers?
– My favorite photographers are Lee Friedlander, Robert Frank, Dorthea Lange, Helen Levitt, Daido Moriyama, Edward Burtynsky, Stephen Shore, Edward Ruscha, Toru Ukai, Llorenš Rosanes, and numerous others. I'm also influenced by painters such as RenÚ Magritte, Alex Colville, and Edward Hopper.
